Another year, another milestone.

Springdale Har-Ber handed coach Sandy Wright her 500th career victory with a 58-44 win over Van Buren on Saturday. It was the season-opener for Har-Ber, which placed three players in double figures.

Wright hopes to build another winner at Har-Ber after losing eight seniors from a team that finished 20-10. Three of those players were starters, including forward Bailey Schalk and guards Paige Redmond and Carlye Bohannon, who are both playing in college this season. Schalk was a three-year starter who decided not to continue her basketball career in college.

Caroline Hornor and Brynn Braswell are the two seniors … Continue Reading ››

Another look — Bentonville 28, North Little Rock 21

Bentonville's defense had a reason to be tired Friday night. North Little Rock's offense wound up with 82 plays and kept the ball for more than 34 minutes in its Class 7A state playoff quarterfinal game at Tiger Stadium, but the Tigers' defense found its second wind at the right moment. Bentonville didn't give up another yard after North Little Rock had a first-and-10 at the Tigers 13, and that allowed the Tigers to hang on for a 28-21 victory. "Our defense stepped up at the end," Bentonville coach Jody Grant said. "We talked to them on that fourth down and told them … Continue Reading ››

Boys: Springdale 51, Mountain Home 31

Devon Young scored a team-high 10 points to lead a balanced Springdale offense, but the Bulldogs’ efforts on the defensive end were what keyed a 51-31 win over Mountain Home in their home opener.

Senior guard David Carachure added eight points for Springdale (2-0), one of four players to score eight or more. But he really made his mark on the defensive end, holding Mountain Home go-to guard Howie Wehmeyer, who scored a game-high 15, to just four points in the second half, denying the ball and playing the passing lanes for steals or playing great one-on-one defense when Wehmeyer did … Continue Reading ››

Girls: Springdale 54, Mountain Home 47

SPRINGDALE — Kierra Lang finally started playing basketball without her knee brace in early November.

The reason was simple.

“Coach (Erin Gatling) made it strong enough to where I thought that I could take it off and play without it,” said Lang, who has battled patella injuries the last two years. “Once I let let loose with that, I really got to get into rhythm and get confidence back.”

Lang’s quickness was evidence. So was her confidence, especially when she hit a corner 3-pointer with 1:39 left that put Springdale up for good as it clawed out a 54-47 home win over Mountain … Continue Reading ››
